07. Training pants versus diapers

What is the difference between training pants and diapers? We’ve outlined the differences below:

Diapers are:

  • meant to be used as a toileting receptacle
  • more absorbent and thicker than training pants
  • wick away moisture very quickly
  • leak less than a training pant

Training pants are:

  • designed with potty learning in mind
  • meant to offer protection against misses
  • generally contain small misses and keep big misses from being a big mess
  • allow child to feel wetness which heightens awareness for potty learning
  • meant to be changed immediately after miss
  • generally much trimmer than a diaper
  • usually much easier to take off for potty break than a diaper

The philosophy of infant potty training/ elimination communication is that we should encourage our children to listen to the messages our bodies give us. To that end, we like training pants over diapers because they do just that. Technological advancement in diapers have made them better than ever at absorbing waste. But the cost to the “convenience” of having diapers that are super absorbent is that our children are losing that signal with their bodies. Many people will find that heightened awareness generally translates to faster potty learning.
